The Youth Employment & Development Program

To develop and nurture goals for academic success and career development in Minneapolis youth ages 14-21* from economically challenged households.

Goals:

  • Academic Success – We support youth to improve their attendance and performance in school, set goals for their future, and prepare for post-secondary education and training.

  • Employability and Job Skills Development – Participants learn important skills to help them find and keep jobs like: employer expectations and communication, time management, resume writing and interviewing, networking and on-line job searching.

  • Training, internship and volunteer opportunity linkages – We make connections between work skills trainings, internships and volunteer work, which helps youth gain on-the-job experience that will help them get a job.

  • Employment – Youth apply the skills and experience they gain to apply for jobs and get hired! Financial literacy skills like bank account management and expense budgeting carry with them after their experience.

Basic Information:

  • Youth participate in group workshops, trainings and have one-on-one time with a job counselor.

  • Annually, 32 teens and young adults participate in this program, including 12 paid summer interns. For many of the summer interns, this is their first job experience.

  • The YED program is a partnership with the City of Minneapolis, and is funded through the Workforce Investment Act.

  • Contact Caryn Olsen at East Side Neighborhood Services (612) 787-4043 or colsen@esns.org) for more information, or if you would like to volunteer. Volunteering could include mentoring a participant, helping with a job search or occupational skills training, etc.

* East Side Neighborhood Services also is affiliated with additional teen and pre-teen leadership development programs. It is a placement site for Step Up, a program sponsored by the City of Minneapolis. We also have a small program for neighborhood pre-teens. For more information about the Pre-Teen Leadership Development, please contact Jazmin Danielson at jdanielson@esns.org
