Adult Employment Services

The Adult Employment Department works with low-income, unemployed, or underemployed job seekers who would like to earn a livable wage and achieve their career goals though full-time work.

Participants get support to build upon skills needed to secure and retain full-time permanent employment though training, coaching, career exploration, and retention counseling.

We can help you:

  • Search for jobs
  • Create or improve your resume
  • Write cover letters
  • Apply to jobs and fill out applications
  • Identify your strengths and weaknesses
  • Prepare for a job interview
  • Acquire work-appropriate clothing for a job interview
  • Create a budget and/or open a bank account
  • Identify the right career for you

Any individual interested in using our services must attend an information session, which is held every Tuesday at 9:30am and Wednesday at 3:00pm in our Job Lab.

NOTE:  Self-pay registrants must make payment at time of registration in order to reserve a space in the class.  Agencies will be invoiced.

Certified Nursing Assistant Training

What does a CNA do? Certified Nursing Assistants assist children, adults or seniors in a variety of settings, such as nursing homes and hospitals providing a variety of services to their clients.This program is in partnership with Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) and Augustana Feeny Manor. Program participants will receive instruction from professors at MCTC and professionals at Augustana. ESNS will provide supportive services to all participants in the areas of transportation assistance, resume and cover letter review, and job placement assistance.Upon completion of this free program, participants will be rewarded with a financial stipend and will be able to take the state certification test free of charge to them.

Eligibility requirements:

Clean background 
Be able to read and write at an 8th grade level
High School Diploma/GED

Forklift Operator Training

Cost: $375

Forklifts are used in a number of work environments including: warehousing, building and road construction, transportation and retail. This training covers both the stand-up reach lift and the sit-down lift. 

Participants must be at least 18 years of age and have at least an intermediate level of English reading and writing skill in order to be successful.  Accommodations can be provided for deaf/hard of hearing and LD participants, though LD participants are encourage to take the initial test independently. Participants are provided with one-on-one assistance to pass the written test, where necessary.

ServeSafe® Food Safety Manager

Cost: $175
This training educates in the areas of basic food safety, personal hygiene, cross-contamination & allergens, cooking time & temperature, and cleaning & sanitation. The Minnesota Department of Health requires that every type of food preparation facility have ServSafe® certified staff.  Being ServSafe® certified will give you an opportunity to advance in your career! 

This class is a two-day, 10-hour course. Participants will take the certification exam at the end of the second day. To register, call the Training Coordinator at 612-787-4068. Class fee: $175.

Leadership In Hospitality

This FREE DEED-funded, Leadership & Management program is designed for adults with experience working in the customer service, sales, food service, and hospitality fields that have the potential to move into supervisory and leadership positions.  Applicants from other employment backgrounds are also eligible.

Participants will receive training, certification and Continuing Educations Units (CEUs) from ESNS and Normandale Community College including ServSafe® Food Safety Manager, Supervision & Management, Intro to Microsoft Word & Excel, and a certificate of participation.
